Irazu Volcano - Central Valley RegionIrazú volcanoAlong the route towards the summit of Irazu you can see majestic views that will take anybodies breath away. Agricultural and dairy farms, as well as views of the Central Valley and the Talamanca range oblige you to stop and take photos. This colosus that dominates the central volcanic range is the highest volcano in Costa Rica reaching an elevation of 3443 meters (11,400 feet) above sea level and from its summit on clear days you can see both the Pacific ocean and the Caribberan sea. Its last violent eruption was in 1963, on the first day of John F. Kennedys visit to the country., Its main crater is known as the Diego de la Haya crater and the lunar views are unique, accessable, and permit you to go on hikes of low difficulty. However, do not forget about the altitude and low temperatures when preparing for a visit to this location. There is an excellent trail for experienced mountain bikers that links Irazu volcano with the city of Turrialba passing next to the volcano of the same name that consists of the second phase of the world famous mountain bike competition called the route of the conquistadors. The terrain planted with farm crops and dairies surround the rock and ash roads that you ride on. Synthesis of activities: Short hikes, excellent scenery, photography, and mountain biking.

Yes, it is out there waiting for you in Costa Rica. Don't spend hours or days planning yourself when there are friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgeable people willing to work with you and plan the perfect vacation.
We became acquainted with Ronald Calvo, Coasts & Mountains Travel and Adventures manager, through our daughter. During her sophomore summer she traveled to Costa Rica with a group for three weeks. Ronald was their local guide. When we decided to go on a family vacation she suggested that we contact Ronald and his travel/tour company. I am thrilled that we followed her advice.
After several e-mails discussing what we wanted to do and see, Ronald arranged the perfect trip. It began with a driver meeting us at the airport, taking us to a nice hotel near San Jose. He returned the following morning to pack us up for a flight to the Osa Peninsula, where we stayed at the wonderful Casa Corcovado. Hotel guides led us through the jungle informing us of this special habitat with its exotic plant and animal life. There were even impromptu Salsa lessons given by the staff (when encouraged by our teenage entourage). We then journeyed north to spend a few days at a beautiful resort in the Nicoya Peninsula, another place with warm, friendly, exceptional people. Then, it was back to San Jose where we finally had a chance to meet the infamous Ronald himself. Ronald and his friend/ tour driver, Harry, spent the day guiding us through local coffee plantations, volcanoes, butterfly farms, and waterfalls. Ronald kept things rolling with lively conversation. It seemed like Ronald could speak two languages at once, half in Spanish for our daughters benefit and half in English (for those of us whose aging minds have forgotten the few words we once knew in this beautiful language). He never skipped a beat. Ronald was amazing in his ability to inform us in detail of the geography and geology of Costa Rica, as well as the economy, politics, health care, and education systems of the country. He knew the name and habitat of every plant, animal and insect we encountered. He did all of this with great charm and a wonderful sense of humor. As we left for the airport, Harry managed a quick stop at a record store for the girls to purchase local music, which they wanted to remind them of this trip.
We have since referred friends to Ronald and all gave him an outstanding recommendation. He is a gem: a wonderful, honest person who always keeps your best interest in mind.

Coasts & Mountains Adventures organized a one week adventure tour of Costa Rica four our group of four. We are all experienced world travelers but had no Spanish nor had we visited Costa Rica before. Ronald is at the top of the pack in his ability to make you feel welcome, safe and to show you the best of Costa Rica. Ronald is very very easy to communicate with. He is knowledgeable about the flora, fauna, history of his country, beautiful sites and shares all of this with grace and professionalism. From the moment of arrival to departure there was never a problem of timing, money, communication, safety, organization or anything. He made sure that our expectations were met in every way. Thank you Ronald for sharing Costa Rica with us, it was a pleasure to travel with you and we recommend you without reservation.

I really enjoyed the trip we took to Costa RIca in April of 2005. The
country is very beautful and the people are amazing . It was made
especially enjoyable by having such a good tour operator, Coasts & Mountains Adventures and off course a great tour guide as Ronaldo and the driver Harry. The are not only always fun, courteous and professional but very educational.
My kids just loved them and cant wait to return. Thank you for such great memories. I have recommended you to all my friends
